Serving the citizens of Tontitown by ensuring compliance with all city codes through effective public contact and education, building cooperative partnerships throughout the community, and enforcing laws in an equitable and impartial manner.

What is Code Enforcement?

The primary function of code enforcement within communities is controlling the battle of blight. The code enforcement officer has a very visible role in our community from the standpoint that the decisions he makes and how effectively he performs his duties can have a major impact on the property values and image of the City of Tontitown. A commonality among all municipalities is that they have buildings, homes, and properties that will age over time. The code enforcement officer supports and enhances property values through effective enforcement of property standards, while working to keep aging buildings, homes, and properties from deteriorating and becoming an “eye sore” to our citizens and visitors.

All communities, large or small face struggles with vacant buildings, trash, tall grass and weeds, graffiti, and inoperable vehicles. With these factors along with areas having blight and deteriorated properties may eventually see an increase in the amount of crime and a significant decrease in property values. Our code enforcement officer provides our community with the first line of action in making sure that these issues are managed in a responsible and effective way.

Safety is another primary way that our code enforcement officer positively impacts our community. Our community has legislative bodies that enact ordinances for the good of the entire community, these ordinances include rules and regulations that take into consideration the safety and wellbeing of the public, such as fire codes, building codes, and general property standards. Enforcement of these ordinances can be essential to the provision of safe and healthy living and working conditions for the City of Tontitown.

Effective code enforcement initiatives see to achieve voluntary compliance as a means of avoiding other punitive methods of enforcement, while still accomplishing what is best for the community in terms of public health and safety. The community should approach code enforcement in a proactive manner. A proactive approach involves addressing issues that may become code enforcement cases or complaints before they escalate to point of mandated abatement or referral to the court system.

Our code enforcement division has many interactions with various members and resources within the community, such as mortgage companies, businesses, residents, and economic development organizations/commissions. It is common that code enforcement interaction is a resident’s first association with the municipality.

Code enforcement has a very intricate, challenging, and demanding role, the job is constantly evolving and changing. The role of our code enforcement officer can be very demanding and misunderstood, however, it can be very rewarding and effective. Code enforcement provides our community with intrinsic and tangible benefits which can profoundly impact and enhance the quality of life, health, and safety of our residents.
