City of Tontitown
The City of Tontitown employs the Mayor-Council type of municipal government. The day-to-day business of the City is conducted by the Mayor. All major decisions are made by the City Council, the representatives of the citizens of the City, in collaboration with the Mayor. Regular City Council meetings are open to the public. City Council meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, at 7:00 P.M.
The Tontitown City Council is composed of six aldermen. The City is divided into three Wards of equal population, and there are 2 alderman from each Ward. Alderman are elected for two-year terms; the Mayor is elected to a four-year term. The Recorder/Treasurer is also elected to a 4-year term.
Together, the Mayor and City Council pass ordinances and declare resolutions. Ordinances are the laws of the City. Ordinances cover such things as zoning, building regulations, the types of businesses allowed in the City, how those businesses conduct themselves, as well as other features of modern municipal law. Resolutions are declarations of the will of the Mayor and City Council, for example, involving the naming of streets and parks in the City.
The City of Tontitown has codified its set of ordinances. Codification simply means we've taken all the ordinances passed by the City Council since 1909 (the year the City incorporated itself) and assembled them into logical categories that make finding a particular ordinance easier than wading through the uncodified mass.
