Tontitown Fire Department
The Tontitown Area Fire Department (TAFD) is an all-volunteer fire department serving a response area of 40 square miles that includes the cities of Tontitown and Elm Springs. The primary source of funding for TAFD is derived from annual membership dues paid by the citizens residing in the TAFD coverage area. Membership dues are supplemented with fundraisers undertaken by the fire fighters themselves.
The TAFD is structured just as a paid professional fire department. At present, there are 24 volunteer fire fighters who unselfishly devote their personal time and resources to train and drill, maintain equipment, fight fires, assist with medical emergencies, and raise money for the TAFD. Of the 24 volunteer fire fighters, 9 are certified EMTs, 1 is a certified paramedic, and 11 are designated first responders. TAFD has "mutual aid" agreements with all other area fire departments, including the Springdale Fire Department.
As a result of many years of hard work and planning, the Tontitown Area Fire Department has built a fleet of fire trucks and amassed the fire fighting equipment necessary, so that most residents in the TAFD coverage area are able to secure an Insurance Service Office of Arkansas (ISO) rating of 6 or 6n. With the addition of a new combination rescue/pumper truck in 2003, the fleet of trucks now includes two pumper engines, one water tanker, two brush-fire trucks, and two rescue units, that afford the capacity to haul a total of 5750 gallons of water to fire incidents.
